Community Garden End-of-Season Potluck: A Night of Reflection and Celebration

Last Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, members of the FCJ Community Garden gathered for an end-of-season potluck at the FCJ Retreat and Conference Centre garden led by Associate Director, Rita Khanchat, to celebrate their shared efforts and reflect on the season. Around six community gardeners, together with their family and friends, came together to share a warm evening of food, conversation, and camaraderie, gathered around the garden’s fire pit. Sr. Terry Smith, fcJ led the evening with a prayer of gratitude for creation, uniting participants of various faiths in a moment of shared reverence.

The FCJ Community Garden, serves as an outreach to connect with neighbors and invite them to experience the peaceful grounds of the Centre. The gardeners this year included both seasoned gardeners and new ones, creating a learning community where those with more experience shared tips, while everyone admired each other’s harvests. Over the years, the garden has yielded an impressive variety of vegetables, fruits, and flowers, despite occasional visits from our friendly squirrels, magpies, and hares. This season saw an abundance of well-grown carrots, though some of the unpredictable weather prevented beets from thriving as usual.

During the potluck, participants enjoyed a variety of dishes brought by the gardeners, making the evening both a culinary and social delight. The fire pit provided warmth as gardeners introduced themselves to one another and shared stories. With winter approaching, the gathering concluded with hopes of health and new pursuits, and all looked forward to the promise of another growing season in the spring. #
